Tech & Now: Smartphones

December 18, 2016

It’s that time of the year again. The one where everyone whips out the best-of lists and tells you what you so badly missed out on. Here, at SnapTimes, we don’t do that (yet. Give us an year; we will make up our own lists). What we would like to show you is just how things have changed in an year, and what better illustration for it than the Tech section? It is mind-numbing how last year, even last month’s ground-breaking innovation is today’s normal. Come, walk with us.

Microsoft launches Lumia 640, 640XL in India

Then:

The new Lumia 640 having a 5-inch HD screen would be available in single as well as dual SIM. It runs on 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. At launch, it would come with Windows 8.1 operating system while it will get the Windows 10 update thereafter this year.

Now:

Ah, simpler days. The above happened AFTER Nokia sold its phone business to Microsoft. But no one said the phone business was easy. After staying for a bit, Microsoft has virtually given up on the Lumia brand, using it only to further discount it or remove a model from sale; the case in India and all over the world. Last heard, Microsoft is concentrating on its own Surface phone (in development). And, a company has BOUGHT the Nokia brand name from the parent brand, and the Nokia phone business from Microsoft (I did warn you it was complex) is promising to launch new NOKIA phones. Phew!

Motorola Launches Moto E 4G at Rs. 7999

Then:

Now:

Motorola has gone on to take the entire alphabet by storm. G, X, M…you name it, they sell it. The Moto E is on its 3rd generation now, and is still a reliable option for a cheap Android smartphone. Hello Moto!

Xiaomi has sold around 1 million phones in India this year.

Then:

That’s quite a surprise because Xiaomi is new to India and that too a Chinese company but certainly impressive, given how limited Xiaomi’s phone supplies have been for the subcontinent. It definitely looks like the smartphone maker has somewhat underestimated the demand for its products in India, which may mean it will manage to sell even more units next year.

Now:

A million. LOL. The Diwali sale saw Xiaomi sell a million phones in 3 days. And Xiaomi claims that its Q3 sales were more than 2 million. Flipkart says that it has sold around a total 10 lakh units of the Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime. After breaking up with Flipkart and proceeding to sell on other sites too, Xiaomi has gone from strength to strength. And of course, the people who buy them are also the same ones who did not buy chinese crackers, in ‘national self interest’. Irony, my motherland.

Nexus 9 Available in India on Amazon

Then:

The most eagerly awaited product NEXUS 9 has been launched in India on Amazon. From other sellers it may still show ‘coming soon’ but Amazon is selling it right now.

Now:

What is the Google phone you do remember from this year? That’s right. There is a growing suspicion that Pixel is going to replace the Nexus range, in some time. Till then, this is the phone which gets its Android updated first. And apparently, Snapdeal and Flipkart do sell it now too.

One Plus 2 release on the cards

Then:

Following the stellar success of Chinese manufacturer OnePlus’s flagship OnePlus One phone, everyone is eagerly awaiting its successor, the OnePlus2 (not the “OnePlus Two”, as earlier rumored).

Now:

Which OnePlus will you have? The 3 or the 3T? There’s seeming to be some chaos regarding where to buy the OnePlus 3, with both Amazon and Flipakrt selling it, and tnow the OnePlus CEO stepping between them; it seems Amazon is still the exclusive partner. As of now, the OnePlus is the third largest seller of premium phones in India. Behind Samsung and Oppo.

PS: Where did our sons of the soil go? Micromax saw its sales did drop in 2016, with it dropping to second, behind Apple India in smartphone sales revenue. Plus, there are the aftershocks of demonetization still shaking the industry. Karbonn also had a steady stream of launches, but sales are hit. Lava a.k.a the-Dhoni-and-Prateik-wala-brand has also admitted to sales and production both feeling the effects.
