Flipkart to start selling Groceries soon
Flipkart is set to start selling groceries by mid-2015, following in the footsteps of Amazon and Snapdeal, who already are taking baby steps in that direction. With Amazon already selling a selected number of packaged foods and Snapdeal roping in gourmet partner Godrej’s Nature Basket, Flipkart is next in line, although no official statement has been released by the online retail giant yet.
This news comes in the wake of Zopnow, a Bengaluru based online grocery website having amassed money to the tune of $10 million in a fresh round of funding 2 days ago.
Flipkart will give stiff competition to established players BigBasket, Zopnow and Local Banya, the pioneers of online grocery shopping in India. With experts estimating that the grocery market contributed to 69% of India’s $490-billion (Rs 300-lakh crore) retail sector in 2013, followed by apparel at 8%, it is no doubt a lucrative choice for online retailers to jump into.
