Whatsapp with all new Voice Calling!

March 9, 2015

WhatsApp is leaving no stone unturned to maintain its supremacy in the messenger app category. After rolling out the much-anticipated Web client to Android users, WhatsApp is now reportedly slowly rolling out the promised free voice calling feature – once again to Android users. Now Hike won’t be able to enjoy its lead on WhatsApp any longer.

However, the voice calling feature is still under testing. According to Pradensh07 (a reddit user) on Friday posted screenshots of the voice calling feature, supposedly accessible in the latest WhatsApp app (v2.11.508) for Android from the company site on a Google Nexus 5 running Android 5.0.1 Lollipop in India. He mentioned that it is an invite based service as of now. You can see his video in which he describes how to call using WhatsApp.

Also, note that he downloaded the apk from WhatsApp’s website rather than from the Google Play Store. In the screenshot, you can see that WhatsApp has changed the UI of the app. Now, you have different tabs for chats, call and contacts respectively.

Based on the report of Pradnesh and the current unavailability of official update, it is hard to tell how much time WhatsApp will take before releasing it and whether the UI will be modified or not. Till then, keep your fingers crossed.
