Change the Default Media Upload Location in WordPress

December 20, 2014

The default upload location for WordPress is in the directory wp-content/uploads. Many people prefer to change this for easy management of files, and in a way, it also helps in making people think that its not a wordpress site.

For WordPress (3.8+)

Steps :-

1. Go to your WordPress Dashboard
2. In Settings, go to Media (Settings -> Media)
3. There, just write the address of the new directory in the follwoing manner.

WordpressChangeMediaDirectory

Write wp-content/files if you want to upload everything inside wp-content

4. Save Changes.

For WordPress (3.5 to 3.8)

We can also change it by anyone just by adding a simple line to their wp-config.php file.

Steps :-
1. Just simple open your wordpress root directory, using FTP or any other file manager.
2. Then open the wp-config.php for editing.
3. Now, there are 2 types of changes that you can make, you can add any one of them.

a. For changing your upload directory to http://yoursite.com/wp-content/files

/* Change Default Media Upload Directory – TechJunkie.in */
define( ‘UPLOADS’, ‘wp-content/’.’files’ );

b. For changing your upload directory to http://yoursite.com/files/

/* Change Default Media Upload Directory – TechJunkie.in */
define( ‘UPLOADS’, ”.’files’ );

 There that was easy. 🙂 Comment below if you have any issues (y)
